The advantages of rigid fixation in the treatment of maxillofacial fractures are well documented and have virtually eliminated the use of extended intermaxillary fixation in the treatment of these injuries. Typically, arch bars have been the preferred method of establishing and maintaining intermaxillary fixation. However, arch bars can be difficult and time consuming to apply.
Maxillomandibular Fixation (MMF) for temporary occlusal and fracture stabilization can now be safely and quickly achieved. These screws may be applied prior to or after exposure of the fracture and in many cases may aid in fracture reduction.
